Pogradeci General Info

 
Pogradeci invites you 20 km before display, offering a wonderful panoramic Ohrid lake, which you can called Lyhnide lake too. There is one of the most beautiful villages, Lini. Lake view is magic in every season and you  will never forgot  this panoramic view. With all this  beauty view you make a lot of photography in every detail. You are in the centre now, there are a lot of people walking on the street, along the lake, who predominate flowers. Second name of Pogradec city is “Flower’s city”. Every season you can find colorful flowers.
 
 
Pogradeci is one of the most charming tourist resorts in Albania because of its position near the Ohrid Lake, which distinguishes itself for clear water. Fish Koran, which is similar to the trout, is reared in this lake. Besides the beautiful beach, your staying in Pogradec is made more interesting by the excursion to the tourist center of Drilon (5 km eastward) with crystal clear fountains that fill the beautiful channels surrounded with trees and by ornamental plants.
Lake Ohrid and its surrounding area shines as a splendidly unique ecosystem. Due to its historic culture and its unique flora and fauna, in 1980, Pogradec was declared by UNESCO as a place of worldwide natural and cultural heritage. For everybody , during all four seasons, this city offers opportunities to relax and have fun. This may be the reason why more and more people return again and again to Pogradec.
Pogradec, it is a city and region with endless possibilities for your enjoyment! It is the right place for tourists of all ages, from one day stays to long holidays, and for honey mooners as well. People are friendly and don't be surprised if they invite you for a drink and some sweet, home made cookies. History

The shores of Lake Lychnidus were inhabited as early as (6000-2000 BC).Lake Ohrid is one of the locations for the Illyrian tribe of the Encheleans that is near Pogradec.The area in the antiquity was at the border between Chaonia and Illyria. This is one of the locations that the Illyrians had started copying the styles of the Macedonians. Drilon, the name of the river that flows into the lake near Tushemisht, is mentioned in early texts of antiquity. The hill overlooking Pogradec is the site of old castle ruins dating back to 5th century Pogradec throughout the centuries was occupied by Ancient Macedonians, Romans, Bulgarians, Serbians, Ottomans, French, Greeks, Italian, and German armies. The second Albanian language schools was started in Pogradec. During the Greco-Italian war in 1940-1941 Pogradec and the areas around it were cut in two by the war front. The town was a favorite summer escape for many communist government officials and particularly Enver Hoxha. The summer residences and the area around them were sealed off from the public
 

Tourism

Pogradeci green parks - You can walk across the lakeside in the promenade "1 Maji", enjoying the freshness of trees and a wonderful view. Here is a 5 km boulevard bordering the lake, where you can find bars with live music, hotels, motels, cafes, and restaurants according to traditional and modern tastes.
 
Pogradec beaches - Pogradec Beach it is situated in center of town and continue with "1 Maji" promenade. It is very popular and has a lot of sand. In the town there are several beaches, private and public with sand and little rocks. Water is very clean . 
Pogradec boats - There are several little and big boats across the Pogradec Lake. You can rent them and you can choose a boat with a driver or you can surf yourself.
Pogradec sport places - There are several places where you can practice sports, like football - Kalceto "Bruklin", beach-volley, basketball and more. At the Pogradec Beach you can participate in beach - volley competitions.
Pogradec at night - In the center of Pogradec, at the place called "Odeoni," cultural events are organized every evening during the summer. Free entry.
There are some Pubs in Pogradec that are open every night from 20.00 -03.00 . They offer music and cocktails. You should be part of the fest
 

Lin peninsula

The lakeside village of Lin is a charming opportunity to see Lake Ohrid life from a traditional perspective. Winding streets lined with old style stone, wooden and brick houses lead to the site of an ancient basilica with 8 colorful mosaics showing fish, water birds and bees, dating from the 5th Century. The Byzantine church ruins, under World Heritage protection, have a modern cover constructed to keep the treasures from further deterioration while awaiting further exploration. The Lake Ohrid and mountain vistas from the top of the hill are outstanding!
 

Goliku Bridge

The Goliku Bridge spans the wild Shkumbin River and dates back to the XVII Century. This old double-span stone structure is situated along the ancient Egnatia Road, near Golic, which is a charming village in the heart of the Mokra region. Along the road to Golic, you will enjoy breathtaking views of waterfalls and mountain scenery from deep valleys. In taking this trip, you will trace the steps of many ancient people, who over the centuries walked, defended, and traveled through the region!
 

Tushemisht and Drilon

Just 4 kilometers away in Tushemisht you can see the DRILON tourist resort, named for the fresh water springs and Drilon River. The many decorative trees and plants are in full harmony with Drilon's clear water springs, strolling paths, characteristic bridges and bird life. Tushemisht has a special history because both King Zog and the former dictator of Albania, Enver Hoxha enjoyed summers in this special place. You can visit this house, now converted to a hotel and restaurant with fine local and continental cuisine!
 

Kabashi Springs

Only 2 kilometers from Pogradec, climbing the hill you will discover a wonderful place for picnics. With fresh fountains and prairies this is the right place for B.B.Q.
This is a very interesting village in the district of Pogradec. The houses are very beautiful, made of stone and roofed with stone tiles. The streets among them are narrow and paved with cobble stones, while grapes and mulberries climb the walls and hang over the streets. The hospitable people of the village offers accommodation for tourists in their houses and tasty home made food with various local specialties. Around the village it is church of St Paraskeva , known as Shen Premte among the local people, there is a graveyard with beautifully engraved stone crosses.
 

Saint Bitri Church

The medieval church of Shen Bitri , as the locals use to call this St. Demetrios' church, is several hundred meters away from the village Potkozhan. This small stone building, roofed with stone tiles is very unique because of its two apses on the eastern side and very specific wall painting in its interior. Although the frescoes are damaged, you can still admire the beauty and mystery of the saints pictured on its walls.
 

Saint Marena Church

The church and monastery of Saint Marena is situated in the north of the village of Llenga, district of Pogradec with a dominated position on the slope of the mountain. The church is a small building, 12 to 8 meters. The altar is separated from the nave with a wooden iconostas 6m wide and 4m high. The icons is engraved and polychrome with floral motives. All the interior of the church is covered with frescoes that belong to the hand of the headmaster of these areas Kostandin Shpataraku.
 

The castle

On the hill near to the city of Pogradec is located the castle of Pogradeci. The castle was inhabited in the V-th  century BC. This was an Illyrian settlement with walls and different types of huts. At the begging it was the castle of the area around it. Later it was inhabited untill the 10th century. After that the inhabitants went down the hill at the place called Gradishte. You can enjoy the beautiful landscape from the top of the hill.

Gastronomy

Across the coast lake there are a lot of bar, restaurant and hotels, and the boat offer romantic walk. The fish Koran has a wonderful taste, and you can find it in the most expensive restaurants, and in the cheapest restaurants too.
When the queen Elisabeth of United Kingdom came to visit Ohrid, she sad: “The Queen of  England meets the Queen of the Lake”. The wine-yards of the zone give the privilege to  taste home-made wine, which is the best and served from all the restaurants.
 

The natural monuments

Geo-monuments
The stone of Kamje. Dardhë in Lipova Pass, 1461 m above sea level. It's a conglomerate rock carved by wind and water, in the shape of the “sailing ship”,  80-100 m long, 70-80 m wide and 60-70 m high. Pogradec-Trebinjë itinerary.
 
The Stack stones of  in Trebinje. 1150 m above the sea level. Conglomerate Stones, carved by wind and water, in the form of stack, 80-10 m high. Pogradec-Trebinjë itinerary.
 
The  Fragment of tectonic separation of Ohrid graben.  Pogradec, going to Mokra. Constitutes in an obvious disconnect between tectonic and molassa limestone in western side of the  Ohri’s graben. Was studied by prof. V. Melo. Pogradec-Mokër itinerary.
 
The cave of Memlishti. Gur i Kuq, Memlisht village, known and named as "Water’ Cave". It is a karst cave in limestone of Crete, with a length of 300-400 m, 80-10 m wide and 23-25 m high, with beautiful micro-forms and a small lake, of which the great poet Lasgush Poradeci called "gjoli”. Rodokali’s cave. Constitutes in a karst cave in limestone of Crete, still unexplored. It starts with a well and continues with gallery over 300 m long, 20-25 m wide, 10-15 m high. It has been foubnd human neolithic settlements. Përrenjas-Rodokal itinerary
 
 
Baribardha’s cave. It  is karst cave in the limestone of Crete. Partly-known, is 30 long, 3-4 m wide, 2-3 m high Pogradec-Baribardhë itinerary
 
The Cave of St. Marena. Situated near the monastery of St. Marenë church. It is karst cave in limestone of Crete. The known section is 180 m long, it contains micro-forms. According to the legend, there is located miraculous sanctuary of Saint Marena. Pogradec- Marenë St.
 
The Llënga’s canyon. Formed in limestone by the karst and of the stream of Llënga a branch of Shkumbini river, it is about 1 km long and 60 m deep. Pogradec-Llëngë itinerary.
 
The stones “ Bride and groom” in Senisht. Mokra. There are  Limestone rocks 2-3 m high, careved from the  wind and karst in the form of "bride" and "groom”. Pogradec-Senisht itinerary.
 
The cave of Najazma Tushemisht. It is a karst cave in the limestone of Trias-Jurasi. It comes out from it a source whic according to the legend, can be considered the blessed water. Pogradec-Saint-Naum itinerary.
 
 Hydro-monuments
 The Source of  Driloni, Tushemisht.  700 m above the sea level. There are several karst sources in the contact limestone-terrigenous, with average flow of about 7m3/ sec. The Water comes from Lake of Big Prespa and Dry Mountain. Wetland ecosystems are borned around the source where we meet a  vegetation and rich fauna. It creates a pleasant  environment. The lakes of Lukova. On the eastern slope of the mountain The Stone of Topi, near Bishnica, Velçan, 1700 m and 2027 m above the sea level. There are two lakes in the glacial circques. The water comes from the lake of Big Prespa. On the surroundings, are located beech and fir forests is the 20-22 m of height, diameter 30 cm and age 160-170 years.
